01.01.07 | JASON LINDNER - ARTIST OF THE MONTH in SOUNDS of TIMELESS JAZZ AB AETERNO
Jason Lindner
Pianist Jason Lindner’s recent debut for Fresh Sound New Talent is among his best work in the world jazz genre. His delicate piano lines are beautifully complimented by bassist Omer Avital and percussionist Luisito Quintero on 10-amazing songs that are sure to bring a new perspective to thirsty ears yearning for more creativity and true trio harmony. Linder wrote or co-wrote eight of the ten songs and plays the piano, melodica and mbira from an expanded consciousness and with exotic mysticism. All of the musicians express their highly developed improvisations through effective soloing as well as collective interplay to give the listener a huge sound that lingers long after each song has ended. The title track opens with Avital’s oud lines complimented by Linder’s melodica expressions and thoughts. Quintero’s percussive taps are mini-gifts that add texture and color. Linder’s solo on “Renacimiento” is filled with Latin grooves and lends itself to a melodic oud and bass duet by Avital and Quintero. All of the songs are beautiful but “Monserrate” surely ranks as one of the most profound. Overall, this great trio brings together three different cultures to create an important genre-defying body of work, fusing African, Latin-American and Middle Eastern music. AB AETERNO excites the senses, gives new life to World Jazz rhythms and provides an excellent vehicle for Linder, Avital and Quintero to shine on both modern and ancient instrumentation. Five stars.
09.12.06 | AB AETERNO PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release, September 12, 2006
JASON LINDNER:
KEYBOARDIST / COMPOSER / ARRANGER
TO RELEASE AB AETERNO JANUARY 9, 2007
TRIO BRINGS TOGETHER THREE DIFFERENT CULTURES TO CREATE AN IMPORTANT GENRE-DEFYING BODY OF WORK, FUSING AFRICAN, LATIN-AMERICAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC
FEATURING OMER AVITAL (Bass, Oud) AND LUISITO QUINTERO (Percussion)
New York, NY - On January 9, 2007, keyboardist, composer, arranger and producer Jason Lindner will release Ab Aeterno (Fresh Sound Records), an important album revealing the timeless threads connecting three musicians of different cultures in beautiful harmony, featuring Latin percussionist Luisito Quintero and Omer Avital on bass and oud. Unique and intimate, the instrumentation draws the listener in.
The seed of Ab Aeterno was Lindner’s desire to record with his musical brother, Omer Avital, the “roaringly inventive” (Jazziz) bassist and composer whom he has been performing with since the opening of Smalls jazz club over ten years ago. “I wanted to share the way in which the two of us vibe together on our instruments, and what I feel is one of my closest musical relationships,” says Lindner. “The album has become so much more with the addition of Luisito Quintero, who plays a different percussion instrument on every track.”
“The ability for the three of us to play easily together comes from what we share,” says Lindner, who is perhaps best known for leading The Ensemble, a progressive New York-based big band that has been active for over a decade and hailed as “one of the era’s most singular and enterprising outlets” (Village Voice). “Although I was born and raised in New York, Omer in Israel and Luisito in Venezuela, we were able to meet musically.”
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jason Lindner apprenticed with the great master bebopper Barry Harris and orchestral / harmonic master Chris Anderson, eventually exploring a world of Latin and African rhythms, funk, r&b (he was Lauryn Hill’s musical director), hip hop, electronica – in general, music. He currently performs with everyone from Baba Israel and Pharaoh’s Daughter to Meshell Ndegeocello and Claudia Acuña. He’s toured the world with the Roy Haynes Quartet, arranged for Arturo O’Farrill’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Orchestra and teaches masterclasses internationally. A regular performer at the infamous NYC club Nublu, he can often be found fronting his trance-y, electro-jazz projects The J L-ectrik and Progress Report, featuring poet/mc Baba Israel.
Luisito Quintero studied at Orquesta Simfonica de Venezuela (The Symphonic Orchestra of Venezuela) and quickly became one of the most sought-after percussionists in the country. He has collaborated with Jack De Johnette, David Sanborn, George Benson and the late Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. He is currently the musical director for Louie Vega and the Elements of Life Band and works extensively with Jack DeJohnette’s Latin Project.
“The contemporary intensification of global exchange is quickly closing gaps revealing ancient and timeless linkage,” says Jason. “As Malian musician Cheick-Tidiane Seck once told me with a big smile, ‘Musicians are all from the same country’.”
Ab Aeterno will be available nationwide on January 9, 2007 through the Barcelona-based Fresh Sound Records.

03.18.05 | FAT CAT WILL REMAIN OPEN!!! As you all well know, Fat Cat, the place where the Big Band performs every Thursday (extension of the former Smalls), has been about to close its doors for the last few weeks.
Now we know that it will remain open. Fat Cat is being saved by some musicians/entrepreneurs who will, basically, lease it, therefore the programming won't be interrupted, and the show will go on.
For upcoming performances, both at Fat Cat and at Smalls, please check calendar.
See you there!
02.22.05 | SMALLS' BIG COME BACK!!! The entire jazz comunity welcomes back Smalls, the downtown, downstairs, dark and dear club that for years was a home to the newest and the hottest musicians and their music.
Mitch, the man behind it all, has kept himself busy at Fat Cat since Smalls was closed in May 2003. Beginning this coming March, Smalls will reopen its doors for all, and Fat Cat will keep giving us music as well, on the weekends, until further notice.
The Jason Lindner Big Band will now keep grooving on Thursdays at Fat Cat, and will perform at Smalls shortly (keep checking our calendar), address 183 10th Street. See you there!
02.01.05 | JASON LINDNER BIG BAND/ENSEMBLE'S 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY! It will be 10 years since we started performing at Smalls in February, 1995. Thanks to Mitch from Smalls/now at Fat Cat, to all the musicians who made it possible over the years, and to all the folks who supported the band. Looking forward to another release - soon to come - and many more shows in NYC and abroad. Special anniversary performances at Fat Cat TBA.
01.30.05 | JL @ Jazz At Lincoln Center On January 28 and 29 Jason had the honor and privilage of performing as a guest artist, along with Claudia Acuña, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra directed by Arturo O'Farrill, in a special presentation entitled "A Celebration of the Great Latin Jazz Vocalists". In addition, Mr. Lindner also arranged Violeta Para's "Volver a los 17" for Ms. Acuña and the orchestra. The event took place at the Frederick P. Rose Hall - the largest of three new concert venues designed especially for acoustic jazz (with the help of artistic director Wynton Marsalis) at the newly-expanded JALC at Time Warner Center, NYC.
01.18.05 | FIRE MARSHAL THREATENS TO STOP THE MUSIC AT FAT CAT The district fire marshal has given the Fat Cat club until mid-march to install a $40,000 fire alarm system due to recent tightening of cabaret laws.
01.06.05 | 2 TRACKS ON FRESH SOUND RECORDS UPCOMING RELEASE... Lindner debues two new arrangements and appears in performance on a new release from Barcelona-based label, Fresh Sound/New Talent, entitled "The Sound of New York Jazz Underground". The double-CD features eight composer/arrangers and "The New Talent Jazz Orchestra", a collective ensemble of 47 artists who have recorded for the label.
12.22.04 | BBC's "it's a jazz thing" The Jason Lindner Big Band opens the newly released documentary on the current state of jazz music (sort of everything and everyone the Ken Burns series failed to mention) with live footage from Fat Cat in NYC. The series, hosted by Branford Marsalis, is being run on BBC World Service. It has, so far, been seen by an estimated 1.5 million viewers.
09.17.04 | Editorial on jazz today #1 "The music called jazz that is heard on the radio today is mostly not representative of what is really going on within the music today, which continues it's ongoing metamorphosis in the current age.
What is publicized to the higher levels within the market and labeled as jazz is actually quite deceiving and is geared to target-market known jazz audiences, especially 2 types: "smooth jazz" (which is a sort of elevator-music, often listened to while driving, shopping or working, and really not conducive to much intelligent thought - most jazz musicians are offended and concerned that this music is actually called jazz), and "standard jazz" - the classic style dating back to the 1940's, the great singers and song-writers of their day, creating the classics that are still performed today. More recent success stories within this style are Harry Connick Jr and Diana Krall.
But for the rest of us that are not thinking about targeting audiences and know better than to be musical slaves to large record companies whose only goal is to sell to it's charted markets; for those of us who are creating the music of our time and are not trying to re-create music from another time... the US market has little use for us.
03.16.04 | Live/UK Lindner returns with a new recording on Sunnyside Records, entitled Live/UK, featuring longtime collaborators (and friends) Jimmy Greene (tenor, soprano, flute), Omer Avital (bass), and Marlon Browden (drums). Recorded live by the BBC at Londons Pizza Express, the small group setting allows the listener a better understanding of Jasons compositional process and his inventiveness as an improviser. The recording includes some of his most well known compositions such as The Five Elements and Natural Trinity and Information Kiss. Live/UK showcases an artist whose talent and creativity continues to fulfill its promises.
